The city

Almería has a priviledged climate and geographical location. It is located in southeastern Spain and of the eight Andalusian provinces it is the most eastern one. It is spread over 8, 774 square kilometers with unusual natural contrasts – from the arid Tabernas desert to the snowy peaks of the Sierra Nevada. The coastal strip, with spectacular volcanic beaches is the zone with the least precipitation and most hours of sun-shine per year in Europe.

The Cabo de Gata-Níjar natural maritime park is of special interest to nature lovers. The volcanic remains and the wet zone are of exceptional ecological value. Almeria has several national parks and is home to the following moutains: el Chullo (2,600 m), el Almirez (2,519 m) and el Calar Alto (2,168 m),where the second most important astronomical observatory is situated.

The desert landscapes and the virgin beaches have been used as film locations for American blockbusters such as “Patton”, “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” as well as for spaghetti westerns and important European films.
